Irrigated Perfumed Rice and Normal Rice Production in Thiagar, Senegal

Coumba Nor Thiam (CNT) is the third largest rice processing company in Senegal, with 30 years of experience in the production and processing of regular and perfumed rice. Since 1987, CNT has grown into a successful rice company, currently working with 2,500 outgrowers across 3,000 hectares (ha) of land and operating its own 500 ha plantation in the Northern River Valley region. With a milling capacity of 120 tons per day, CNT currently processes 15,000 tons of paddy rice annually. CNT also demonstrates a strong commitment to gender inclusion, with nearly 40% female staff and active support for women in farming, including collaboration with five women’s groups comprising more than 650 female outgrowers. 

CFC financing supported the purchase of farming and irrigation equipment necessary for scaling up CNT’s profitable rice milling business. The investment was made with the expectation that it would increase processing capacity to 40,000 tons by 2026, while expanding the outgrower network to 3,250 farmers. The investment is expected to contribute to increased farmer productivity and incomes, with total outgrower production projected to rise significantly and average profit per farmer expected to increase from EUR 760 to more than EUR 1,000.
