China Pledges to Share Best Practices with CFC to Accelerate Poverty Alleviation Amid Global Challenges
The Hague, 24 February 2025 – In a significant meeting aimed at addressing the pressing challenges of poverty and sustainable development, the Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) and Ambassador of Uganda, H.E. Ms. Mirjam Blaak Sow, the Chairperson of the Executive Board of the CFC and Ambassador of the Philippines, H.E. J. Eduardo Malaya, and the Managing Director of the CFC, Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed Belal, held a joint meeting with H.E. Mr. Jian Tan, Ambassador of China to the Netherlands, at the Embassy of China in The Hague. The meeting was followed by a lunch hosted by Ambassador Tan, with Mr. JIN Yuan, Counsellor, and Ms. YU Bojue, First Secretary, from the Embassy of China assisting during the discussions.
The dialogue underscored the critical need for the CFC to reinvigorate its drive for poverty alleviation, particularly given the aggravating global poverty situation. The meeting served as a platform to apprise China of the CFC’s way forward during these challenging times and to explore avenues for collaboration. China expressed its willingness to share its best practices in poverty reduction, emphasizing that such knowledge transfer could help member states avoid the agony of trial and error, thereby accelerating progress toward sustainable development goals.
Ambassador Belal expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Tan for hosting the meeting and facilitating a productive exchange of ideas. He highlighted China’s genuine interest in the Open-ended Strategic Framework (SFW) Committee and its offer to host a future SFW meeting, which reflects China’s strong commitment to fostering meaningful collaboration with the CFC. Ambassador Belal also commended China’s readiness to share its best practices in commodities and poverty alleviation, expressing hope that this would have a transformative impact on reducing poverty and hunger globally.
Ambassador Tan reiterated China’s dedication to supporting the CFC’s mission, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing global challenges. He expressed China’s willingness to leverage its experience and expertise to assist member states in achieving sustainable development and poverty alleviation.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to maintain close contact for necessary follow-ups, underscoring the shared vision of a collaborative and impactful partnership between China and the CFC.
