New Study on East African Rice Sector
CFC study provides comprehensive profiles on the rice sector of nine East African countries
Rice consumption is growing at a fast pace and is rapidly becoming the staple food crop in nearly all African countries. Production in Africa is hampered due to shortcomings in policy, agronomy and inefficiently developed value chains. As a result, African rice farmers cannot compete with imported rice in terms of price and quality. Dependency on the world market - with a relatively small amount of rice traded - is exposing African countries to high risks of price shocks and food shortages.
The food crisis in 2008 made many rice importing countries turn their attention to their own domestic rice sector. In order to get an overview and identify potential threats and opportunities for development in the East African Rice sector, the Common Fund has commissioned a study to compile comprehensive profiles of the rice sectors in nine East Africa Countries.
