Fairtrasa - Peru
Fairtrasa Perú sources sustainably produced fresh fruit, including mangoes, avocados, ginger, and other crops, from smallholder farmers across Peru, including those in rainforest regions. The Fairtrasa Group has been among the pioneers in promoting socially and environmentally sustainable production methods among smallholders in Latin America.
Fairtrasa Perú sources from smallholders and supports them in establishing cooperatives for this purpose. These cooperatives receive market access, training, prepayments, and assistance in obtaining and managing certifications, among other forms of support. Where possible, Fairtrasa Perú also assists cooperatives in developing their capacities to a level at which they can independently manage exports to Fairtrasa’s European sales offices. The company was the first in Latin America to export Fairtrade-certified avocados.
In addition to its efforts to improve smallholder livelihoods, Fairtrasa differentiates itself as a pioneer in environmental sustainability and climate action. Its products hold various organic certifications, while several products also carry additional certifications such as Demeter biodynamic certification. More recently, the company has promoted regenerative agricultural practices among its smallholder suppliers and has achieved Regenerative Organic Certified status for part of its supply chain.
The investment was made with the expectation of further strengthening this model by increasing the number of supported smallholders from approximately 340 to nearly 400, alongside an increase in price premiums from approximately 20% to 30%. The cultivated area is projected to expand from about 600 to more than 700 hectares, while wages for full-time employees are expected to increase to approximately USD 5,700 per year. Gender inclusion is also expected to improve, with the share of female temporary workers projected to rise to more than 40%. In addition, the project is expected to enhance environmental outcomes through the expansion of regenerative practices, the planting of more than 20,000 trees, and the continued use of sustainable infrastructure and certifications.
