Equity for Tanzania (EFTA), Tanzania
Equity for Tanzania (EFTA), established in 2003, is a Tanzanian financial institution dedicated to promoting economic growth and reducing poverty through asset-based financing. As one of the first leasing companies regulated by the Bank of Tanzania under the 2013 leasing legislation, EFTA provides financing for productive equipment across key sectors including agriculture, agri-processing, transportation, and tourism. The company enables clients to acquire equipment from approved suppliers while maintaining independence in supplier selection and ensuring quality standards. Operating nationwide from its headquarters in Dar es Salaam and Moshi, with branches in eight regions, EFTA employs 65 permanent staff and 20 interns. The institution currently manages a net lease portfolio of approximately USD 20 million and aims to expand this to USD 50 million by 2028. EFTA’s business model is centred on asset-based financing through machinery loans, small business loans, and leasing arrangements that lower clients’ upfront investment requirements. Under its leasing model, the financed asset serves as the primary security, reducing collateral requirements and mitigating risk for both EFTA and its customers. The company facilitates up to USD 2 million in leases each month, with typical lease values ranging from USD 10,000 to USD 100,000 and repayment periods of two to four years. To support the expansion of its leasing activities, particularly in agriculture and agri-processing, EFTA secured a USD 1 million term loan from CFC, enabling it to grow its portfolio and increase access to finance for smaller-scale enterprises.
