El Salvador reiterates interest in the Common Fund for Commodities

20 January 2025, The Hague.  Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed Belal, Managing Director of the Common Fund for Commodities, had a meeting with H.E. Mr. Agustin Vasquez Gomez, Ambassador of the Republic of El Salvador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The meeting took place at the Embassy of El Salvador in The Hague.

After exchange of pleasantries, Ambassador Belal provided Ambassador Vasquez with an overview of the current and potential future initiatives of the CFC. In light of the present global challenges, Ambassador Belal emphasized the importance of fostering stronger working relationships and partnerships with member countries so that we can bridge the gap between the Global South and the North.

Ambassador Vasquez offered his sincere commendation for the CFC's stride for the alleviation of poverty and assured Ambassador Belal of the continued interest of El Salvador in the organisation and a possible membership.

Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed Belal expressed the interest of CFC in collaborating with El Salvador, particularly in support of the transformative programme initiated by President Nayib Bukele. This programme, which aims to address systemic challenges such as corruption, aligns with the CFC’s mission of promoting sustainable development and poverty alleviation. “Poverty and corruption are deeply interconnected, with corruption often diverting essential resources that could uplift the most vulnerable,” said Ambassador Belal, Managing Director of the CFC.

CFC looks forward to the opportunity for El Salvador to actively engage with its initiatives and to share its best practices in governance and development. Such collaboration would benefit not only the people of El Salvador but also CFC member states, as they continue to work towards a more equitable and sustainable future. In the same way, CFC is keen to scale up best practices from the new El Salvador where it is one of the safest for investors.

The meeting concluded with mutual assurances of support and a commitment to follow up on necessary actions in the coming days.
