Argentina expresses continued support for the Common Fund for Commodities

The Hague, 27 August 2025 – Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed Belal, Managing Director of the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Diego Sadofschi, Alternate Governor of the CFC for Argentina and Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Argentine Republic, to discuss matters of mutual interest and explore avenues for deeper cooperation.

Ambassador Belal briefed Mr. Sadofschi on the CFC’s ongoing activities and the growing challenges it faces in meeting the increasing demand for its services. He highlighted the Fund’s tangible impact on the ground and emphasized the importance of collective action to alleviate poverty, strengthen resilience, and promote sustainable development in commodity-dependent developing countries.

Ambassador Belal expressed sincere thanks to Mr. Sadofschi for his active engagement and steadfast support of the CFC, noting that Argentina has consistently played a constructive role in advancing the Fund’s mission. He highlighted the potential for further development of agricultural value chains to enable farmers to secure greater benefits while enhancing national economic resilience.

The discussion also included the Humanizing Value Chains (HVC) initiative, which aims to address persistent challenges such as low farmer incomes and unequal value distribution across commodity chains by promoting transparency, equitable income allocation, and inclusive growth. Ambassador Belal reaffirmed Argentina’s support for the HVC initiative and expressed his pleasure in announcing that Peru has officially endorsed HVC, setting a precedent for other countries to join in promoting fairer and more inclusive commodity value chains.

Mr. Sadofschi welcomed the visit, strengthening Argentina’s commitment to the CFC. He commended the Fund’s work in advancing inclusive growth and development, underlining Argentina’s relevance as one of the world’s foremost agricultural producers and exporters. With its pivotal role in global food and commodity markets, Argentina’s voice and vision remain central to any effort to build more resilient and equitable value chains.

Ambassador Belal recalled with gratitude the enduring contribution of Argentina’s own Raúl Prebisch, the first Secretary-General of UNCTAD, whose theory of the “core and periphery” continues to shed light on the structural inequalities that persist in commodity trade. Sharing this reflection, Ambassador Belal encouraged Argentina to further deepen its engagement with the CFC, so that its leadership as a major global commodity nation can continue to inspire and strengthen the collective voice for fairer and more inclusive terms of trade worldwide.
