Peru and CFC Join Forces to Lead Global South Efforts on Fair and Sustainable Commodity Value Chains

The Hague, 23 March 2026 – Sheikh Mohammed Belal, Managing Director of the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Ms. Franca Deza Ferreccio, Ambassador of Peru to the Netherlands and Governor of CFC for Peru, at the Embassy of Peru in The Hague.

Discussions centered on enhancing cooperation between Peru and the CFC, with a focus on identifying opportunities for new project proposals that would support the country’s agricultural sector and commodity-based livelihoods. Ambassador Belal underscored the CFC’s role in supporting member countries through technical expertise, capacity-building, and structured financing. He emphasized that such assistance can help turn promising concepts into scalable initiatives capable of delivering meaningful benefits for smallholder farmers and rural communities.

The Managing Director also highlighted the importance of close collaboration with national institutions and local partners to ensure that proposed projects are firmly rooted in local contexts, well-conceived, and able to generate sustainable socio-economic and environmental outcomes.

In addition, Ambasador Belal expressed appreciation to Peru for its formal endorsement of the concept of “humanizing the value chains.” He encouraged continued support from Peru in advancing and elevating this concept at the United Nations level, noting that Peru’s leadership and influence could play a key role in shaping broader international recognition and adoption of the approach. He further emphasized the importance of codifying the structural challenges across commodity value chains by examining each chain in detail—particularly the disproportionately low share of value received by smallholder farmers at the farmgate. In this context, he highlighted the potential of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital traceability, not only to enhance transparency and efficiency across value chains, but also to ensure fairer income distribution, strengthen accountability, and improve livelihoods for producers.

H.E. Deza Ferreccio welcomed the CFC’s continued engagement with its Member States and expressed appreciation for the Fund’s commitment to supporting countries facing complex development challenges. She noted Peru’s strong interest in working closely with the CFC to advance initiatives that strengthen agricultural value chains, empower farmers, and improve rural livelihoods. She also emphasized Peru’s unique role as a leading voice of the Global South, well-positioned to champion inclusive and sustainable development priorities on the international stage.

Both sides agreed to continue technical consultations to identify viable project opportunities that promote sustainable agriculture, strengthen food systems, and enhance resilience within Peru’s commodity sectors.
