Robusta Quality and Marketing Improvement by Optimal Use of Coffee Terroirs (CFC/ICO/05)

The project seeks to establish, on a pilot basis, the identification of specific characteristics of Robusta coffee, which are assumed to be associated with identifiable geographical parameters (soil, climate, altitude, etc.), so that the prices of Robusta coffee from different areas can be differentiated. This project is seeking to test whether buyers would pay a price premium if the Robusta coffee were differentiated by region where it is grown. Like Arabica coffee, Robusta coffees originating from different climatic regions have different taste and cup characteristics and therefore could be marketed as products of specific origins. The project seeks to understand the sources of this unique taste and to catalogue the basis of each taste. The pilot project will be carried out in Côte d’Ivoire. Coffee specialists from Togo, Madagascar and Cameroon are invited to Côte d’Ivoire for training during the project period. The project implementation was delayed because of the security situation in the country.
