Improving Marketing Efficiency of Artisanal Fishermen in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean (CFC/FSCFT/23)

The project objective is to contribute to the improvement of the seafood supply chain in Central America, Mexico and Cuba, including both domestic and export markets, through improved marketing efficiency of artisanal fishermen. The project is designed to provide technical assistance to the artisanal communities in an effort to address the common problems identified, particularly in the areas of fish handling, processing, marketing and quality control. Artisanal fishermen communities in Central America, Mexico and Cuba have directly benefitted from the training in proper handling, processing and marketing and in the use of the equipment for adding value to their products. The know-how of better handling and processing will reduce post-harvest losses and lead to better market prices for quality products.

The project has been operational since March 2006. Ice making machines were purchased for participating fish communities, and several training sessions on fish handling, processing and marketing were provided to artisanal fishermen.
