The main objective of the project was to develop and transfer technology for commercial processing and alternative uses for cocoa by-products in non-traditional markets. The project was co-financed by the Ghana Cocoa Board and Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Togo and Nigeria participated in the technical work.
It has been found that products like toilet soap and local cosmetics compare favourably with existing products and meet local standards and requirements. Substantial progress has been made in the commercial production and marketing of animal feeds using cocoa pod husks, utilisation of cocoa pulp juice (sweatings) for producing soft drinks, wine and alcohol, and pectin for cocoa-based marmalades and jams. Advances have also been made in the utilisation of potash for fertilisers and local soap manufacturing. Cosmetics, including toilet soap, body pomades and creams have also been successfully developed based on cocoa butter extracted from off-spec (sub-standard) cocoa beans and cocoa biscuits and cakes for local consumption utilising cocoa powder. The techno-economic feasibility studies have been completed and a terminal workshop involving the private sector was held to disseminate the results to interested countries and companies.
