The project is seeking to establish a hides and skins collection system with an in-built quality control system which is market driven. The project has been designed to address the problems of small livestock production systems as there is virtually no formal collection and grading system in the smallholder sector in the participating countries. The current collection system is primarily designed for the large-scale livestock producers through organised centralised abattoirs located in major centres. The project addresses constraints to the collection of hides and skins from rural butcheries, abattoirs and other rural slaughtering slabs. The main beneficiaries are the primary producers of hides and skins (farmers and butchers) and traders, exporters, artisans and tanners. Tanners have an opportunity to purchase better quality hides and skins and thereby produce better quality leather.
